Addiction & Teens

The majority of adults who meet the criteria for having a substance use disorder started using substances during their teen and young adult years.

Home life, childhood traumas, bullying, economic hardships, and circle of influence are all factors in the risk a teenager has in developing a substance abuse or addiction.

Youth with substance use disorders also experience higher rates of physical and mental illnesses, diminished overall health and well-being, and potential progression to addiction.

Talking with your teen about these risks can help prevent them from making the wrong choices and hanging out with friends who might encourage them to head down the wrong path.

Substance use by adolescents can lead to adverse outcomes and permanently affect the trajectory of their life.  Things like:

  • Injury
  • Criminal activity and incarceration
  • Bad grades
  • School dropout
  • In ability to care for their own basic needs
  • Infection
  • Blood-borne diseases such as HIV and hepatitis
  • Death
