Addiction & Depression

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, data indicates that those with a mood disorder such as depression, are twice as likely to abuse substances than a person without a mood disorder.

There are many reasons why someone might suffer from depression such as grief, trauma, health conditions, isolation, stress, and much more.

Additionally, those who started their addiction without depression or a mood disorder often times develop one because of the addiction.  Shame, guilt, self-loathing and all the negative emotions that accompany addiction can lead to depression or a mood disorder.

Note: Many prescription drugs increase suicidal thoughts or actions in some people.  If you are taking a prescribed medication and have noticed an increase of suicidal thoughts or feelings, or changes in your mood or behavior, please contact your medical provider immediately and notify them of your situation, or call the National Suicide Prevention Line at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).  Trained crisis workers are available to talk 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Your confidential and toll-free call goes to the nearest crisis center in the Lifeline national network.  These centers provide crisis counseling and mental health referrals.

If you, a family member, or friend, feel they are in danger to themselves or others, you are encouraged to call a professional for help.   MentalHealth.gov   https://www.mentalhealth.gov/get-help/immediate-help
