Addiction & Professionals

Our professions and jobs play an important part in our personal identities and play a significant role in our lives, even when we're outside of the workplace.

Some jobs are physically demanding, some are mentally challenging, and some are emotionally draining.  All of these issues can cause physical and mental concerns that can have an impact on our overall well-being.  Many professionals chose to deal with these struggles through some type of substance abuse or risky behavior.

Additionally, a lot of professionals have favorite meeting places where they gather regularly to have a drink and socialize with people they work with and others in the same profession.  No one wants to feel left out or like they don't belong, so they drink when they don't want to and they drink more than they normally would.

There are many professions linked to alcohol abuse and illicit drug use. The high stakes, long hours, erratic schedules, and exposure to traumatic experiences that many professionals experience lead some to consume alcohol or illegal drugs to cope with the stress.

Some of the professions with the highest rate of substance abuse or addiction are (In no particular order):

  • Restaurant Workers
  • Doctors & Medical Professionals
  • Lawyers
  • Construction & Mining Workers
  • Sales Professionals
  • Emergency Responders
  • Law Enforcement
  • Finance & Banking Professionals

If you work in one of these industries, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to become an alcoholic, abuse drugs, or become an addiction.  Becoming educated about the higher risks will help you be more aware of your drinking and substance environments, habits, and potential triggers.
