Types of Addiction |
| While addiction is often associated with drugs or alcohol, it can take several forms, and understanding the different types can help reduce stigma and encourage people to seek support. One major category is substance addiction, also called substance use disorder. This includes alcohol, nicotine, opioids, stimulants, cannabis, sedatives, inhalants, and other drugs that can activate the brain’s reward system. Over time, a person may develop tolerance, cravings, withdrawal symptoms, or difficulty stopping even when the substance causes serious problems. Substance addictions can range from mild to severe, and treatment may include counseling, medication, medical support, and long-term recovery planning. Another category is behavioral addiction, sometimes called non-substance addiction. This involves compulsive behaviors that become difficult to control, such as gambling, gaming, shopping, internet use, or other activities that interfere with daily life. Although no chemical substance is being taken, these behaviors can still affect the brain’s reward pathways and lead to patterns of craving, loss of control, and continued behavior despite negative consequences. |
