Most-Common-Addictions |
| The Most Common AddictionsAmong substance-related addictions, alcohol and nicotine are two of the most common because they are legal, widely available, and socially normalized. Alcohol use disorder can damage physical health, relationships, and judgment, while nicotine addiction—through cigarettes, vaping, or other tobacco products—can be especially hard to quit because nicotine reaches the brain quickly and reinforces repeated use. Other common substance addictions include cannabis, opioids, stimulants such as cocaine or methamphetamine, and misuse of prescription medications. Opioid addiction is particularly dangerous because of overdose risk, especially when fentanyl is involved. Stimulant addiction can harm sleep, heart health, mood, and decision-making. Behavioral addictions can also disrupt daily life. Gambling disorder is the best-recognized behavioral addiction, but people may also struggle with compulsive gaming, internet or social media use, shopping, eating patterns, or exercise. These behaviors become concerning when they interfere with school, work, finances, relationships, or mental health |
